Dan Dankworth Makes the Local Abilene Paper.
A container emitting small amounts of radiation still sits inside a vault at
a park on Grape Street.
Found in March, the Dumpster-sized container is slightly radioactive.
Moving and disposing of the hazardous container has been delayed due to the
paperwork required, said Bill Whitley, who works in the city’s community
enhancement division dealing with environmental crimes.
Dan Dankworth, one of the owners of the family owned business, said Pine
Street Salvage has not received highly radioactive material. Some metal from the
oil industry, which contains low levels of naturally occurring radioactivity,
does come into the yard. That is separated and stored in a small pile of metal
at the company’s yard.
Dankworth attributed familiarity with codes and regulations as the reasons
his company has not dealt with much radioactive material.
“We’ve pretty well got the customer trained as well as our workers,”
Dankworth said.
